Bentzi's Story

How old were you when the war started?

I was 3 years old.

Where did you live?

Bukovina, Ukraine

Short story:

When I was in the camp my sister used to sneak in the Germans kitchen steel some flower put it under her shirt and give it to my mom, my mom would bake it and we would have bread. In the basement of our camp there was a secret Talmud Torah, my sister used to take me there. One day when we were walking there I saw a starving kid, and I gave him my peace of bread.

Experience after the war:

After the war we went back to our house in Ukraine. The way there was very hard, we walked 3 months in bad conditions with little food and bad clothing. When we finally got there we found my dad who at the time the Russians liberated the camps ran away so he won't get taken to the army. A year later we decided we wanted to go to the Palestine. We got to Romania but we got stuck there for 4 years because we couldn’t cross the border to Austria and form there we would get a train to Palestine. After those 4 years we finally got on a ship to Israel (the year was 1950).

When we got to Israel we stayed in a Ma'aboret. Later on my dad got a good job and we moved to Jaffa into an Arab house. Over there we had 1 room. Later on my dad got a better job and we bought our own house and it was bigger and nicer.
